Diest
Diest is een mooie stad in Vlaams Brabant (stadsrechten in 1229)
De rivier Demer vloeit doorheen Diest.
Het Diestse laken was heel begeerd in de 14de en 15de eeuw.
Diest is een zgn. Oranjestad zoals Breda, Veere, Orange (band met huis Oranje Nassau)
Aan de Grote Markt ligt de Sint-Sulpitiuskerk , tussen 1321 en 1534 opgetrokken uit ijzerzandsteen en witte kalksteen. Het is een typisch schoolvoorbeeld van de Demergotiek.
Het ommuurde Begijnhof is zonder twijfel een van de meest authentieke adressen van Diest
Het Begijnhof (gesticht in 1253) met de Catharinakerk is Unesco Werelderfgoed.
Het poortgebouw, in 1671 is gebouwd in rubensiaanse barokstijl.
Omstreeks 1675 bedroeg het aantal begijnen ongeveer vierhonderd.
In de Begijnhofkerk bevinden zich de vier evangelisten van Theodoor van Loon (Vlaamse Meesters in situ)
Vergeten we zeker niet de Citadel, een 19e-eeuws fort.
Het moest voorkomen dat bij een eventuele Hollandse aanval de vijand zou kunnen doorstoten naar de hoofdstad Brussel.
De citadel was bedoeld als zelfstandig bastion dat autonoom kon standhouden bij een belegering of zelfs inname van de stad
Wist je dat de musea van Diest erg toegankelijk zijn.
Zo is er het Museum van de Gasthuisapotheek naast de toeristische dienst, waar een erg waarheidsgetrouw beeld wordt geschetst van hoe de gemiddelde apotheek er in de 18e eeuw uitzag.
